Mamonde Brightening Cover Watery Cushion SPF50+ PA+++

The spring cleaning bug has invaded. I have been furiously purging, scrubbing and organising. Me taking a break by reviewing my brand new Mamonde cushion is an attempt at staying sane throughout it all.

Name: Mamonde 마몽드 Brightening Cover Watery Cushion 브라이트닝 커버 워터리 쿠션 SPF50+ PA+++
Price: RM 90 for 15 g
Made in: Korea

This cushion delivers a cooling sensation during application, as if it is dousing my skin with moisture. The matte finish was a surprise; I thought that it'd be more luminous with a name like Brightening Cover Watery Cushion.

Well, to its credit, the coverage is rather considerable - it dials down the bits that I can't be bothered by (redness, discolouration and such). For things that really vex me, for example, chronic dark circles and severe hyperpigmentation, this alone won't cut it.

Now on to the part where I have to throw shade: the inclusive waterfit puff causes the cushion to pool in pores, cling to dry patches and look cakey. I can't even begin to describe how horrifying it was to see myself in the mirror!

After a couple of false starts, I had the sense to apply this cushion with my own sponge applicator. Guess what? All of these problems disappeared!

Discard the puff and use something else. It is more trouble than it's worth.

I featured shade No.21N Medium Beige in this post, but I am more of a No.23N Natural Beige. If you are looking for a cushion for the warmer months, then you could do a lot worse than this one. Find all five shades at all Mamonde beauty counters as well as 11street.my and lazada.com.my for RM 90.

Sugao Review: Cheek & Lip, Air Fit CC Cream Smooth SPF23 PA+++

Sugao (スガオ) - meaning bare, natural face - is a Japanese makeup series that draws on naturality, sheer lightness and softness in achieving natural beauty. The star of the show for me is, without a doubt, the Cheek & Lip (RM 59.90 for 6.5 g). It has a light, fluffy mousse-like formula that blends easily.

Available in 3 colours - Natural Red, Active Orange and Brilliant Pink - this 2-in-1 hybrid product is best applied with the most underutilised makeup tool: fingers. I work a small dot onto the apples of my cheeks (or the centre of my lips) and use tapping motions to blend out.

The soft lustre of colour that Brilliant Pink lends my cheeks is nothing short of flattering, but it doesn't quite work as a lip colour for me (anything this pale just doesn't show up on my lips). Instead, I use it as a primer, and it provides a matte surface to enhance the colour of any lip product that goes on top of it.

Formulated with Rohto's patented Air-Fit Technology, a tiny blob of Air Fit CC Cream Smooth SPF23 PA+++ (RM 69.90 for 25 g) covers a surprising amount of ground with the breathable airy formula blending seamlessly with my skin.

At the risk of spoiling the party, I do think the claims are stretching the truth a little (minimising imperfections, blurring pores and absorbing excess sebum), but it is marvellous at brightening the complexion (I am using 02 Pure Ochre), evening out redness and creating that pulled-together look.

It relies on a good canvas to work with because it will sit on flakes, pool into dry areas, and highlight dry patches. If you have PIH or dark circles, you will require a separate, heavy duty concealer. But if you are going for the au naturel look, then the Air Fit CC Cream Smooth SPF23 PA+++ is the man for the job!

Shop for Sugao at selected Watsons outlets as well as watsons.com.my.

This is my second go at a white coloured Catalina Geo base (third overall if I include the blue base). I feel like I have said all I need to say previously, so I won't bore you by reiterating any of them here. Aside from the bit next about blending the primer out carefully.

Y'know, instead of having something in your teeth, you have a lot of somethings on your face, which is equally annoying embarassing. So yes, beware of the trail of crushed pearls!

And here are my old posts in case you are interested in having a nose:

Shu Uemura Stage Performer Block: Booster & Lightbulb Glowing Face Powder

Shu Uemura is now sold at sephora.my! Pick up the best-selling eyelash curler, the much-vaunted eyebrow pencils or any of the award-winning cleansing oils.

I went down the base makeup road, and nabbed the Stage Performer Block: Booster (RM 160 for 30 ml). Apart from Colorless which I have on hand, this primer is also available in Natural Beige and Fresh Pink to correct any imperfections.

It blocks environmental elements and boosts hydration with the power of botanicals, namely, peony (anti-inflammatory), corn (anti-oxidation) and water lily (moisturisation). It also doubles as a sunscreen with SPF50 PA+++ protection, making this a true multi-tasker.

It takes a gentle approach in aiding radiance by lending the skin a dewy sheen, and so gets tempered down underneath foundation, but on bare skin it is so, so believable. I mix it with my foundation; I can deal with the sheered out coverage, even though I should be out and about in the full coverage ones, hurhurhur. The lightweight texture makes wearing it a comfortable experience.

A light sweep of the puff blew my mind; the Lightbulb Glowing Face Powder (RM 145 for 15 g)'s oil-coated powder particles captured and reflected the light from my skin to mimic a soft-lit glow without the powdery effect.

The finely milled powder is packaged in a jar with a practical screen sifter and comes with a specially designed lightbulb puff by Shu Atelier. The puff allows for better powder pick up and greater pay-off on the skin. Just remember to tap the excess off - it is all about being light-handed.

It doesn't settle in fine lines and does a brilliant job of locking everything in place. What I have noticed, though, is that it is not very good at soaking up oil and taking away shine, which is a shame because this feature is essential to survive the heat and humidity here. If you don't mind a little shimmer in your finishing powders then Shu Uemura's should be right up your alley.

Now on to the before and after pictures; I know how you all look forward to them. Haha!

L'Oreal Paris Makeup Designer True Match Genius SPF26 PA+++

Known for delivering wearable everyday glamour with innovative products, L'Oréal Paris revealed a brand new identity for its makeup products in star studded bash at Le Méridien Kuala Lumpur a few moons ago. With this debut, beauty enthusiasts are able to discover the art of makeup from three aspects:
Face Architect
Eye Artistry
Colour Obsession

3rd from left: Group Product Manager of L'Oréal Paris Malaysia Daniel Lim, General Manager of L'Oréal Consumer Products Division Darren Ho and Product Manager of L'Oréal Paris Makeup Designer Florence Ong

Base makeup never fails to get my blood pumping so of course I had to bang on a racehorse of a product from the Face Architect stable: the True Match Genius. It promises to smoothen skin's surface like a primer, glide and unify more precisely than a fluid foundation, cover imperfections like a concealer and finish like a powder. Sounds absolutely brilliant right??

Name: L'Oréal Paris Makeup Designer True Match Genius SPF26 PA+++
Price: RM 59.90

It has a pretty decent selection of shades - 7 altogether - and the one I wear is the lightest in the golden category, G1 Gold Ivory (only because it has more obvious yellow undertones than its sisters).

This foundation is very creamy and emollient. Due to the extreme creaminess, a brush may leave unsightly streak marks during application, which is why it is best to go in with the inclusive sponge, or a sponge wedge. Wet or dry is up to you - I myself prefer a damp sponge.

It gives a pretty good evenness to the skin: redness is neutralised and pigmentation isn't as obvious. There is no need for a separate concealer with this, but I did dot the Bourjois Radiance Reveal Concealer beneath my eyes to further disguise shadows.

Before

After

Although this is targeted for all skin types, oilier skin types should set it with a setting powder to lock everything in place. As mentioned above, it is too emollient to be left alone. Wear time is about an hour before touch-ups are needed (it moves about too much!).

Saying that it takes the place of a primer and a powder is a bit of a stretch. My experience with the True Match Genius tells me that I needed a primer to fill in my massive pores and a powder to tame my T-zone. It does a good job as a foundation cum concealer though, so there is that.

So, this is the opinion of a girl suffering from combination skin... care to share the perspective from the other side of the spectrum in the comment section? You can find out more about L'Oréal Paris Makeup Designer's new innovative products at lorealparis.com.my.

Chuu Beige Stick Foundation

Another month, another foundation, and this one is by Chuu Beige!

Name: Chuu Beige 츄 베이지 Stick Foundation 베이지 스틱파운데이션 21 Light Pink
Price: ₩ 29,000 for 13 g
Made in: Korea

I have said it before, and I will say it again, pink toned foundations are not for me. 21 Light Pink is most decidedly on the pink side of the spectrum and a bit too light to boot! I have half a mind to buy 23 Natural Beige just to ensure my review is in no way biased *shifty eyes*

It is rather thick and heavy which on hindsight, explains the medium coverage. And when layered, I can even get away without using concealer. Only because I am fine with some shadows and discolouration from hyperpigmentation peeking through - I have learnt to accept that my skin is far from perfect, hurhurhur.

Before

After

That said, it has a soft, very glidable texture that makes blending (fingers, brushes or sponges) a breeze. It is long lasting too (without the use of a powder!), which simply defies comprehension but fills this low-maintenance sloth with joy. The matte finish can be a boon or a bust; I like a bit of luminosity to to fake a natural healthy glow (not that I have any business with it once I factor in my oily skin and humid surroundings).

The con for me: it doesn't fill in gigantic pores. This can be easily solved with a makeup base, but I like it when my foundation can do everything. Don't you? Haha! The con for you: it will emphasize flakes and dry patches, so if you struggle with these problems, then this foundation may not be for you.

The Chuu Beige Stick Foundation is available in 3 shades and retails for US$ 35 at en.chuu.co.kr.

Bourjois Radiance Reveal Concealer

Bourjois claims that the Radiance Reveal Concealer is enriched with water from the glaciers of Mont Blanc along with Hyaluronic Acid to visibly smooth away wrinkles and fine lines and hydrates the under eye area for up to 24 hours.

Name: Bourjois Radiance Reveal Concealer
Price: RM 39.90 for 7.8 ml
Made in: France

While this is labelled as a correcting and illuminating concealer, it isn't at all shimmery. The creamy and blendable consistency provides a medium coverage and a nice brightening effect for the under eye area. And while it is able to cover imperfections including blemishes (for me at least), the shades are too funky (for me again, at least) to be used for that purpose.

It comes in 3 shades (2 of which are brought in) which is admittedly insufficient to cater to all skin tones. I am a match for 02 Beige because my complexion brings out the salmon undertones in it (virtually undetectable on anybody else I must say). Let's hope that Bourjois will extend the range!

01 Ivory - 02 Beige

It does sit on the skin a little though, so I would suggest thoroughly blending for a more natural finish. Also set it with powder, because creasing will inevitably happen, no matter what other bloggers may tell you. Or it could be my oily mug and ever deepening fine lines creating disorder as usual *sniff*

Before

After

I know people of all skin types who have raved about this concealer, so I would happily recommend this product to anyone out there (provided if you find a colour match). Please let me know what you think if you have had a go! And do check out my review on the foundation counterpart to this concealer over here.

The full ingredient list for Radiance Reveal Concealer:
Aqua (Water), Isopropyl Myristate, Dimethicone, Isohexadecane, PPG-15 Stearyl Ether, Glycerin, Propanediol, Saccharide Isomerate, PEG-30 Dipolyhydroxystearate, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Phenoxyethanol, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Magnesium Sulfate, Parfum (Fragrance), Menthyl Lactate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Hyaluronic Acid, Citric Acid, Sodium Citrate, Geraniol, Linalool, BHT, Tocopherol [+/- May contain: Mica, CI 77007 (Ultramarines), CI 77891 (Titanium Dioxide), CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499 (Iron Oxides)].

Bourjois City Radiance Foundation SPF30

Bourjois's City Radiance Foundation promises to make the complexion glow and provide continous 24-hour hydration while protecting the skin from aggressive urban factors.

Name: Bourjois City Radiance Foundation SPF30
Price: RM 54.90 for 30 ml
Made in: France

I love the packaging – the squeeze tube is light to carry and compact, meaning I could easily slot it into a travel/everyday makeup pouch. The second thing I noticed was the scent. Fresh water flower fragrance? Count me in please (I adore scented base products even though they may be bad for the skin)!

The thick, creamy consistency (just like you'd imagine a proper foundation to be) gives the skin a matte yet natural medium buildable coverage. It smooths away pores, hides localised redness and evens out the skin tone. I apply this using damp makeup wedges. Blending it in with my fingers also works nicely.

Before

After

The shade range is not the most comprehensive... 4 shades are brought in (out of 6) and I wear the middle, 03 Light Beige. There is nothing in the spectrum for darker skin tones, which will quite rightly miff some. 03 is not yellow-toned enough for me - you may recall from other foundation reviews that I resemble a banana more than a peach colour-wise, haha - but I am not fussed about that.

02 Vanilla - 03 Light Beige

The staying power is the only downside for this foundation. It started separating around my mouth and crease along my nasolabial folds after 3 hours or so. My T-zone fared worse, it gobbled up this foundation up within an hour; I couldn't see any trace of it left when I checked in the mirror! Mayhaps a primer will be able to prolong its longevity.

Nonetheless, this really is a rather decent foundation considering it retails for a mere RM 54.90, has SPF 30 and goes regularly on sale at Watsons. If you prefer a matte finish and a more uniform look to the skin then there is no harm in giving it a look!

The full ingredient list for City Radiance Foundation SPF30:
Aqua (Water), Titanium Dioxide, Isohexadecane, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Dimethicone, Isopropyl Myristate, Glycerin, PPG-15 Stearyl Ether, Propanediol, Methyl Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Imperata Cylindrica Root Extract, PEG-30 Dipolyhydroxystearate, Alumina, Phenoxyethanol, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Stearic Acid, PTFE, Magnesium Sulfate, Hydrogenated Lecithin, PEG-8, Ethylhexylglycerin, Parfum (Fragrance), Carbomer, Biosaccharide Gum-4, Sodium Citrate, BHT, Geraniol, Linalool, Potassium Sorbate, Citric Acid, Tocopherol, Biotin [+/- May contain: Mica, CI 77007 (Ultramarines), CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499 (Iron Oxides), CI 77891 (Titanium Dioxide)].

9wishes Vanishing Balm (VB Cream)

Vanishing Balm earned the nickname celebrity cream and also Gangnam cream on some channels. It is formulated with vitamins B3, B5, C and E, and free from all sorts of nasties such as alcohol, parabens, artificial colouring, mineral oil, artificial flavouring, sulphate, triclosan, formaldehyde and BHT.

Name: 9wishes 나인위시스 Vanishing Balm 베니싱 밤 (VB크림)
Price: ₩ 39,000 for 50 ml
Made in: Korea

The cream is dispensed through a pump nozzle and has an opaque white appearance. The fluid formula glides on effortlessly and literally feels like a serum. Be careful not to squirt out too much because a little goes a long way. It leaves my skin looking and feeling velvety smooth.

While it is not designed to be a moisturiser - it does have some moisturising properties thanks to various plant extracts - I am able to use it in place of a moisturiser and my skin has yet to kick up a fuss. Korean makeup artists advocate the use of CC creams straight over toners/lotions during summer and I applied that concept to this cream. Do bear in mind that it might not be rich enough for dry skin or if you live in a different climate.

The instant brightening effect - somewhat like the sunscreen phenomenon - counteracts sallow undertones beautifully. To even things out, I extend the application to my neck for a better colour match. This product also contains Niacinamide, Arbutin and Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate where continuous and consistent application will hopefully result in an improved skin tone.

Without - With

Vanishing Balm is an indulgence because it serves no other purpose besides brightening and moisturising (provides close to zero coverage and zero oil control). You can read more about it on the brand's website 9wishes.co.kr.

The full ingredient list for Vanishing Balm:
Water, Glycerin, Cyclopentasiloxane, Titanium Dioxide, Sodium Hyaluronate, Butylene Glycol, Cyclohexasiloxane, Niacinamide, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, PEG-10 Dimethicone, Dimethicone, Phenyl Trimethicone, Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract, Paeonia Suffruticosa Root Extract, Arbutin, Polyacrylamide, C13-14 Isoparaffin, Laureth-7, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer, Xanthan Gum, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate, Broussonetia Extract, Morus Alba Bark Extract, Centella Asiatica Extract, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, Artemisia Vulgaris Extract, Vaccinium Angustifolium (Blueberry) Fruit Extract, Ginkgo Biloba Leaf Extract, Rosa Canina Fruit Oil, Solanum Lycopersicum (Tomato) Callus Culture Extract, Zanthoxylum Piperitum Fruit Extract, Pulsatilla Koreana Extract, Usnea Barbata (Lichen) Extract, Lecithin, Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil, Ascorbic Acid, Phtyosqualane, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate, Panthenol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Powder, Allantoin, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate.

IOPE Air Cushion XP Intense Cover

Faking a clear complexion is easier than ever with the IOPE Air Cushion XP Intense Cover! Formulated with two different powder sizes, Melting Complex, Mineral Water XP, Siberia Peptide 6 Selection, three types of vitamins and Pore Elastomer, it nourishes, boosts skin firmness, brightens and absorbs excess oil for a flawless and healthy finish.

Name: IOPE 아이오페 Air Cushion® XP Intense Cover 에어쿠션® XP 인텐스 커버
Price: ₩ 40,000 for 15 g ×2
Made in: Korea

For starters, this foundation smells like peaches. The cushions by Etude House bear the same scent too, so perhaps this is a trait shared among the brands under the Amore Pacific umbrella?

The medium (buildable!) coverage is good enough to even out blotchiness and take some of the red out of the areas with a lot of sensitivities. For those wanting more polish, you may need to do a bit of targeted concealing. I don't mind a hint of bare skin to peek through on the days I wear base makeup (to stop myself from looking like I have caked on cement), so this amount of coverage is ideal for me.

It actually feels fairly nourishing, perhaps due to its rich formulation (we are talking about IOPE here!). It gives the most gorgeous, luminous finish and gets me through the entire day without disappearing. The T-zone area would benefit from a powder though, to ensure everything is locked in place - this would only be necessary if you live in a hot and humid climate or if you have combination/oily skin.

Here, I am wearing I23 Intense Cover Beige. I23 (supposed to be more beige in tone than say, I21 Intense Cover Vanilla) is ironically a little too neutral for my skin and lends it the faintest touch of pinkness. It is wonderfully healthy and all but my terribly yellow toned neck highlights the colour discrepancy all that more. As a whole, I like it a lot, but I do think that it would have been perfect should it be a tad yellower. IOPE, extend your shades please?
