Canmake Cheek Gradation 04 Chocolate Stripe

I tend to slobber over the items recommended by the popular blogger Miss Mona, this girl can sell ice to an Eskimo hahaha!! Despite owning a few of these Cheek Gradation blushes, 04 Chocolate Stripe is the one that makes a frequent appearance on her blog, so this is the colour that I got (^ ω ~)

Name: Canmake キャンメイク Cheek Gradation チークグラデーション 04 Chocolate Stripe
Price: ¥ 840
@cosme rating: 4.0

There are four shades in Canmake’s Cheek Gradation blushes to create a sense of depth. The lightest shade is applied on your cheekbones, the medium shades on the apples of your cheeks and the darkest shade to contour (applies to all gradational blushes).

Packaging: Clear plastic compact, a bit on the flimsy side, but it does what it is supposed to do so never mind. It also comes with a brush.

Colour: Dark chocolate brown, russet, pale pink and ivory (from top).

Texture: They are soft, crumbly and super shimmery, bordering frosty. The darker shades are fairly pigmented whereas the lighter ones have light-medium colour payoff.

I achieved my first look by swiping the pink and russet on, and then frantically buffing it away with a kabuki, as the russet looked very dark on me. Since I was rather lazy to redo my base makeup, I then packed a whole load of the pink on.

In case you are wondering, I did not end up looking like a clown, the pink by itself is too light for me to overdo it. I didn’t highlight nor contour my cheeks, my cheeks were shimmery enough plus what if the chocolate brown stripe turned out to be another scary shade?!

There's no way that I'm giving up, so for my second attempt in using Chocolate Stripe, I decided to swirl all four colours together like any normal blush. My cheeks turned out rather bronzey, not a look that I was going for, but still tolerable.

I wouldn’t recommend this particular colour if you’re looking for a blush; it leans toward the bronzer side. If you do not mind shimmer, this range'll be a nice choice - I watched a guru on 我愛美丽 use 01 Pink Stripe on a model, and the effect was rather remarkable!

Suqqu 大地女神 Collection & Face Protector N

Suqqu is not for the faint at heart because the price tag is reflects its brand concept - to nurture and enhance the sophistication that is the award of maturity.

For this entry, I’m reviewing a few Suqqu products – two eyeshadow singles, a highlighter and a sunscreen. The former three are limited edition and were released in S/S 2007 for their 大地女神 (Daichimegami) collection.

(Source: suqqu.com/)

These three powder products are housed in a LE lotus motif compact. This compact was designed by Mr. Shogo.

Name: Makeup Compact
Price: ¥ 2,625
Release date: 9.2.2007

Simply exquisite!

And before you ask, I have no idea who Mr. Shogo is haha! He also conceived another LE compact in white:

(Source: suqqu.com/)

The shades that I got are in EX-46 水煙, EX-48 夏宵 and EX-03 真砂.

EX-46 Mizukemuri is a pearly light grey.

Name: Suqqu Powder Eyeshadow EX-46 水煙 (Mizukemuri)
Price: ¥ 3,150 for 2.3 g
@cosme rating: 5.8
Release date: 9.2.2007

EX-48 Natsuyoi is a navy with light blue sparkles.

Name: Suqqu Powder Eyeshadow EX-48 夏宵 (Natsuyoi)
Price: ¥ 3,150 for 2.3 g
@cosme rating: 5.8
Release date: 9.2.2007

These eyeshadows are soft, silky and easy to blend They have medium pigmentation and super subtle shimmers.

EX-03 Manago is a pale beige highlighter.

Name: Suqqu Powdery Cheeks EX-03 真砂 (Manago)
Price: ¥ 4,200 for 4.5 g
@cosme rating: 4.8
Release date: 9.2.2007

It has a fine pearly texture. It’s just beautiful and purrrrrfect for highlighting. For some reason it doesn't look good as an eyeshadow.

At the moment, Suqqu has only released a single sunscreen and it’s the Face Protector N.

Name: Suqqu Face Protector N SPF30 PA+++
Price: ¥ 4,725 for 30 g
@cosme rating: 4.5
Release date: 14.3.2008

It has a light custard colour, creamy yet milky texture and the scent isn’t too strong. For the price, the amount of product given is rather minuscule.

Blend Eyeshadow 07 爽青 that was reviewed in an earlier entry also has a navy. I was curious to see how it’d compare to EX-48 夏宵:

From left: Powder Eyeshadow EX-48 夏宵, Blend Eyeshadow 07 爽青

EX-48 夏宵 is a true navy whereas 07 爽青 has a grey undertone. They are sufficiently different enough for me to justify both acquisitions (^ ω ~)

PS: Suqqu is only sold in Japan, Thailand and the UK.

MakeUpShow Brushes Review

MakeUpShow is a well-known Chinese cosmetic brushes brand. Their brushes come in several ranges to accommodate varying budgets, and the ones that I’m reviewing in this entry are from the High and Black Series. Most of the bristles on these brushes are from natural hair, hence they are better at absorbing and trapping makeup media.

(Source: 7bella.com/)

The brushes in High Series have short handles and these handles are made from black walnut. I adore these lacquered walnut handles, the finishing is absolutely beautiful!!

Name: H01 Powder Brush
Price: S$ 49.90
Dimensions: Full length 160mm, hair length 44mm, width of the ferrule foot 20mm
Hair type: Squirrel

The fluffy, dense bristles in H01 are deliciously soft, which is typical for a brush made from squirrel hair. It deposits and buffs powder smoothly on my face without any scratching whatsoever. I use it with my NARS pressed powder to set my liquid foundations or BB creams.

Name: H02 Blush Brush
Price: S$ 29.90
Dimensions: Full length 144 mm, hair length 33.9 mm, width of the ferrule foot 19.5 mm
Hair type: Squirrel

H02 is very dense, very soft with a tip that comes to a fine point. It is perfect for precise blush placement. Some of you may not be keen on this brush, the small brush head only covers a small part of your cheek making it more time consuming to blend the colour out.

The Black Series has long black coated wooden handles just like MAC brushes. Both series are pretty evenly matched even with the price difference.

Name: 18B01 Angled Blush Brush
Price: S$ 19.90
Dimensions: Full length 182 mm, hair length 32 mm, width of the ferrule foot 21.8 mm
Hair type: Goat

The bristles are soft, fluffy yet dense and do a fantastic job in dusting a smooth and even amount of powder blush on my cheeks. It is also the ideal size to blend any excess quickly. Angled brushes offer more control compared to regular tapered blush brushes, which is the reason I favour 18B01 for blush application over H02.

Name: 9E01 Medium Shader/Blending Brush
Price: S$ 15.90
Dimensions: Full length 154 mm, hair length 8.6 mm, width of the ferrule foot 12 mm
Hair type: Pony

9E01 is stiff but not too stiff to use. It picks up and packs on a sheer wash of eyeshadow to my lid area perfectly. Pony hair is the best bet if you have a heavy hand and tend to go overboard when packing on eyeshadow like me haha!! (- ω -)

Name: 8E01 Medium Blending Brush
Price: S$ 21.90
Dimensions: Full length 152 mm, hair length 9 mm, width of the ferrule foot 7 mm
Hair type: Sable

8E01 is too tiny and not fluffy enough to be a blending brush. The bristles are firm, and they’d do as a pencil brush if the tip is more tapered. I can’t think of ways to utilize this brush (´ ω `)

Name: 8E05 Medium Shader Brush
Price: S$ 20.90
Dimensions: Full length 158 mm, hair length 13 mm, width of the ferrule foot 9 mm
Hair type: Sable

The bristles in 8E05 are soft, firm and also slightly fluffy. This shader brush is perfect size for my lids and it picks up, applies and blends eyeshadow so nicely. I’m getting more of these MakeUpShow shader brushes, they are a must-have!

Name: 5E05 Pencil Brush
Price: S$ 15.90
Dimensions: Full length 141 mm, hair length 7.8 mm, width of the ferrule foot 4 mm
Hair type: Pony

This is supposed to be a crease brush, but I find it too itty bitty and fine for that. I use it dab and smudge powder eyeshadow along my lash line. This technique forgoes eyeliners, and this results in a natural big eyed look → taught by Kevin 老師 in an episode of 女人我最大

Name: 3E01 Eyeliner Brush
Price: S$ 12.90
Dimensions: Full length 141 mm, hair length 5.4 mm, width of the ferrule foot 3.4 mm
Hair type: Korean synthetic

3E01 has a finer and slimmer tip than the eyeliner brushes that I usually use. It works better than them in creating a fine and precise line.

Name: 4L01 Lip Brush
Price: S$ 13.90
Dimensions: Full length 175 mm, hair length 8.8 mm, width of the ferrule foot 5.7 mm
Hair type: Sable

It comes with a metal cover, which is perfect for my makeup pouch. I use it to sheer lipstick out at home because I am too forgetful to reapply lipstick when I’m out and about. In the case that I do reapply, it’ll be glossy Japanese lipsticks or lip glosses, so this brush doesn’t get much love from me, but it is nice to have it around in case I ever need it.

Name: Black Brush Bag
Price: S$ 14.90
Dimensions: Length 225 mm, width 75 mm
Material: PU leather

This zippered bag can hold 9 - 12 brushes. It is perfect for MakeUpShow brushes, regular MAC brushes wouldn’t fit as they are slightly too long.

I did not detect any scent when I first received these brushes or even after washing them. Even after undergoing numerous vigorous washes the eye brushes did not experience any shedding or bleeding. On the other hand, the face brushes did bleed and shed but only during the first two washes.

I wouldn’t waste any more money with low quality cheap makeup brushes *coughs Etude House coughs* that are just plain shoddy. MakeUpShow brushes are very well made, fit my requirements perfectly and most importantly, they are very easy on the wallet. Besides that, brushes with natural bristles get softer with use unlike synthetic bristles. I these brushes!!

For those of you who are interested, MakeUpShow makeup brushes can be purchased from 7bella.com. They are an authorized dealer based in Singapore and they provide worldwide shipping.

Disclosure: Press samples.

Sonia Rykiel Lipstick AC Review, Swatches, LOTD

The Lipstick AC range was recently discontinued and any information on it was removed from the official Sonia Rykiel website. The picture below is courtesy of Google Cache haha~

(Source: soniarykiel-cosmetics.com/; Translation provided by Google Translator)

Packaging: Stripey golden beige, bronze and charcoal tubes.

Scent: Melon scent – it is remarkably similar to YSL Rouge Pur lipsticks → perhaps this is a high end French thing (^ ω ~)

Colour: The colours that I possess are 18, unknown (I’m inclined to believe that it is 19) and 23.

18 is a matte rosy pink. It has the best texture and colour payoff out of the three that I own.

Name: Sonia Rykiel ソニア リキエル Lipstick リップスティック AC 18
Price: ¥ 3,465 for 4 g
@cosme rating: 4.9
Release date: 25.8.2006

19 is a shimmery muted coral. It has a decent texture, not as creamy as 18 but not as dry as 23.

Name: Sonia Rykiel ソニア リキエル Lipstick リップスティック AC 19
Price: ¥ 3,465 for 4.0 g
@cosme rating: 4.9
Release date: 22.8.2008

23 is a shimmery orange beige. It is the perfect nude on my lips As much as I love the colour, I couldn’t help but to notice that the formula is slightly on the dry side. And please don’t let my swatch scare you, my lips look so muuuuuch better in person.

Name: Sonia Rykiel ソニア リキエル Lipstick リップスティック AC 23
Price: ¥ 3,465 for 4.0 g
@cosme rating: 4.9
Release date: 22.8.2008

Texture: They wear very well and most importantly they feel comfortable on. They are pretty long lasting if you don’t eat or drink, but I’m sure every lipstick out there has this characteristic haha!

These Sonia Rykiel lipsticks are an absolute pleasure to use as well as easily being one of the most beautiful lipsticks that I have in hand Any lipsticks that you favour? Please let me know in the comment section!

DUP Eyelashes Fixer EX552

I had to focus on getting a good lash glue ever since lash fever overtook my waking (and sleeping) thoughts (^ ω ^) A high quality glue is very important, you don’t want the edges of your lashbone to fly up or fall off when you’re out and about (> ω <)

Name: DUP Eyelashes Fixer EX552
Price: ¥ 945 for 5 ml
@cosme rating: 5.0

I wavered between quite a lot of brands before finally deciding on DUP. DUP is very popular in Japan and it is highly ranked on @cosme, the Japanese Makeupalley. According to the DUP website, their glues are water and sweat resistant.

(Source: d-up.co.jp/)

EX552 is white and dries completely clear. There’s a newer release EX553, which is the black version. I was advised to choose EX552 - I won’t see a big mess if I fiddle with the placement of my falsies. And yes, I had to realign my lashes numerous times in the beginning, getting EX552 definitely saved my makeup!

It gets tacky after wafting it for a bit and it is easy to remove. I also like that it comes with a brush applicator, which makes application a breeze plus it is convenient for me to top up the corners.

I have used my share of lousy glues, and this is definitely head and shoulders above them! There are plenty of other brands out there but I’m sticking with DUP for a long while (^ ω ^)

Go ahead and get this glue if you guys are interested in it, it definitely won’t let you down! Plenty of e-tailers carry it - do shop at your own discretion.

Any questions? Leave me a comment and I’ll get back to you asap!!

On a completely different note, I have just implemented Disqus.. I can always switch back to blogger's own commenting system so let me know whether it is to your liking or not (^ ω ^)
